The municipality of Zutphen is embracing fresh flowers again as gifts to residents and employees. A good decision, because a bouquet of flowers symbolises connection, something our society can use well. Flowers make people happy, bring happiness and comfort to people's lives. This is not only the opinion of the floriculture sector, research also shows.
A few other municipalities will ban the bouquet of flowers from 2026. The reasons given are “switching to sustainable alternatives” and “flowers would not be sustainable enough”. It is to be welcomed that municipalities want to make responsible choices. But it's important that choices are based on facts, not assumptions. As a floriculture sector, we like to think along and actively seek connections with municipalities. For example, on Entrepreneur Day on November 21, mayors will receive a bouquet as a symbol of connection.
We understand the concerns about crop protection. We are critical of ourselves and realize that we were not transparent enough for a long time and did not enter into dialogue. We demonstrate what steps we are taking, including transparency from growers through certification and reducing plant protection products. More than 90% of Dutch flower growers are already working with biological control agents, making the Netherlands a global leader. Dutch growers work according to strict rules with products that are allowed and safe. According to the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, consumers are not at risk: flowers are not eaten and contact via skin or scent is minimal.
Flowers provide connection, happiness and comfort when grieving, getting married and other meaningful moments. By giving flowers, you give appreciation. It has been scientifically proven that flowers contribute directly to our well-being. Those who have flowers at home will be happy about this. And when you receive flowers as gifts, you feel valued. This social, emotional connection is important, especially at a time when people are more likely to face each other.
The floriculture sector is of great value to the Netherlands. As a global leader in innovation, with solutions to social challenges in the field of sustainability, such as geothermal energy, vital energy supply and water management and the contribution to the economy and employment.
The connection between municipalities and their residents, with local growers and florists is important. For example, a grower in Pijnacker supplies heat from a geothermal source to 24 fellow growers, a school, a swimming pool, a sports center and 543 homes. Many flowers grown in the Netherlands stay in their own country, so consumers can buy Dutch flowers from the local florist.
The welfare benefits of flowers, the achievements of Dutch floriculture entrepreneurs with organic crop protection, innovation and economic value should not simply be put aside. As a floriculture sector, we are therefore happy to reach out to municipalities. By talking to local entrepreneurs and our organizations, municipalities can make decisions based on facts. With locally grown and certified flowers, we can together provide the connection that is so much needed today.
A bouquet for the mayor is not just a gesture, but a tangible sign of our shared commitment and commitment.
